Say What?!?

  • General Mills (not that General Mills) is planning on big things in 2012 for Cheerios.  How about some peanut-butter flavored Multi Grain Cheerios and Dulce de Leche Cheerios?  Sound good to you?  I think the PB ones will be good but not sure about the DdL.
  • It still boggles my mind trying to figure out how the entire population DPRK who attended the fun-eral of shithead leader Kim Jong-Il was weeping and/or crying uncontrollably.  They were ruled under an iron fist of a dictator that no one else will miss.  My guess is they were forced to show the emotions or else.  Pretty ridiculous - and comical.  I haven't seen acting that bad since the last Nicolas Cage movie came out - or in every Nicolas Cage movie ever!
  • Alaska State Troopers is a show you should probably already be watching, if not for your preexisting interest in reality police shows for the video portraying the landscape and culture of the Great White North.  It's pretty damn amazing how some (read: most) of the population lives up there.  Definitely a place to go on my Bucket List.
  • New York, Alaska, and Wisconsin charge the most for a pack of cigarettes in the United States.  NYers pay on average, $10 a pack while our counterparts in Alaska pony up, on average, $9.10 a pack.  In Cheese country, you're $9.00 lighter in the wallet after buying a pack.  Wanna know what $9 can buy you?
  • The Islanders are the worst team in the Eastern Conference.  They've played 34 games and are last in goals scored (75), last in assists (133), and tied for last in shutouts (0). They do lead the league in something though, empty net goals allowed (10)
That's all the time I have today.  Hope your New Year's Eve plans are starting to materialize so that you're not staying home by yourself - again!

Rusk-ing

Just working on taking down this rice rusk. No big deal, it's all focus.

Who is Norris Cole?

Who would you guess are the top three scorers for the Miami Heat?  James.  Wade.  Cole!?!

Norris Cole, a 6'2" guard from Cleveland State is making quite an impact early on in his rookie season.  He's listed as Point Guard but only has 2 assists through two games, so I'm interested to see what his role will be moving forward.

Averaging 13.5ppg through the first two games, he's more than likely going to unseat Mario Chalmers as a starter for the Heat.  It's still very, very early in the season but there always seems to be a story like this one.  He went from the Horizon League's CSU Vikings to South Beach playing alongside the likes of LeBron and D-Wade.  And for Norris' sake, I hope he maintains the early success.

Cleveland State you're probably thinking, who the hell are they!  They were 27-9 last season and are off to a great start again this year (11-2) including wins at Vanderbilt, Wright State, and Rhode Island - they've only played 4 home games through their first thirteen.

They've produced five NBA players - Franklin Edwards, Darren Tillis, Clinton Smith, most notably Jim Les, and now Norris Cole.  Cole is the cousin of Eagles defensive end Trent Cole who is having another great year for the underachiving Eagles, recording 43 tackles to go along with 10 sacks.

Hailing from Dayton, Ohio, the rookie averaged over 21ppg during his senior year at CSU.  He was drafted by the Bulls in the 2011 draft, was then traded to the Timberwolves, and finally found his way to South Beach.

Norris Cole.  A name you might want to make note of, even if you can care less about the NBA, as is often the case with me.

New Twists for the New Year

With 2012 bearing down on us, I thought why not make some changes to WRT - nothing too drastic, just a few minor tweaks.

I want to try to stay on task with topics for blog posts.  If you've read WRT before, you'll understand some things happen that I immediately deem "blog worthy" and those spur-of-the-moment posts will continue, but I wanted to create a new direction.

That being said, here's my proposed layout:

MONDAY:  Sports post - I have to stay true to the heart and soul of the blog (SPORTS tag)
TUESDAY:  Tuesday's Trends - what people are searching for and what they're interested in (TRENDING TUESDAY tag)
WEDNESDAY:  Sports post (SPORTS tag)
THURSDAY:  Current events and headlines that might not be front page news (NEWS tag)
FRIDAY:  Sports post and Follow Friday - an ode to the Twitter Galaxy (#FF tag)
SATURDAY/SUNDAY:  A little glimpse into my life and a recap of the week that was (WEEKENDER tag)

This stuff seems pretty petty but I think it'll help me really focus on creating great posts and it'll help you stay organized - those of you that still drop on by.

I hope you find the changes worth my time and have a great New Year's Eve - and remember, safety doesn't take a holiday.  Don't drink and drive.

Merry Christmas ... and can you put your arms down?

First of all, I wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, Happy Kwanzaa, Happy Festivus, whatever it is you celebrate.  I hope it was/is every bit of awesome.

Second thing real quick, since it's fresh on my mind.  I just got back from the gym in an effort to anti-slug myself after gorging myself with food for the past two days and there is one glaring flaw at every gym across the country and quite possibly the world - meatheads.

Yeah, I"m talking about this dude:
The guy that walks around flexing in the mirror after a set.  Or the guy who can't physically bring his hands to the side of his leg - and who probably needs a bedet since he can't wipe his own ass.

Clean up your act.  No one cares how big you are and how great you think you look.

And two things:  1. Walk a litle faster.  2.  How bout you give the machine a wipe down when you are done soaking it with sweat.

And lay off the juice and protein shakes.

Stuff-ing

  • USC stud QB Matt Barkley is headed back to school.  It was announced at his presser the other day.  Heisman front-runner - you betcha.
  • I'm a twitter maniac and it seems so is everyone else I follow - must be the cray holiday spirit.
  • My Islanders are terribly inconsistent - they just lost again 5-3 tonight, at home, to Toronto.  Three goals allowed in the first period killed them.
  • Moonshiners - highly recommended.  Takes place in Virginia, North Carolina and the surrounding areas where people have enough cojones to set up stills and make a living - tax free and illegally.  Pickle and Popcorn are my favorite dudes.
  • National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation is hilarious - I am not sure anyone but Chevy Chase could have pulled off Clark Griswold.  "She's a beaut Clark, a real beaut!"
  • Check out my dude - Cody B. Ware, not to be confused with KoKo B. Ware - black metal rap, pretty good stuff.
  • While you're listening to music, check out an old friend of mine, Travis (frontman for This is Hell).  Warning - not for the faint of heart or those not used to getting their face melted -

Stocking Stuffing?

I am, thankfully, all done with my holiday shopping.  I think.  Either way, the thing people always seem to struggle with is stocking stuffers - little things that are cheap and practical.  Here's a list of things you could get and things you probably shouldn't get, in picture form.  So take my advice, don't be a sucky gift giver.

DON"T BUY:  Whoppee Cushion
BUY: Stormproof Matches (at REI.com)
DON'T BUY:  Drinking Helmet (EVER!!)
BUY:  5x5 Rubik's Cube (at rubiks.com)
BUY: Domino Set (anywhere)
BUY:  PlugBug, for the Mac lover (at twelvesouth.com)

Brady > God, errr, Tebow

So when push comes to shove, a leader with actual talent triumphs over a leader with subpar talent.  Brady was the grinch who stole Christmas cheer from Broncos and Tebow fans nationwide.  And it showed what a competitor he is.  Do you honestly think Brady wasn't pissed off over the amount of praise Tebow has been getting?  The Patriots are 11-3, are the best team in the AFC, and his skill playera aren't even close to as talented as the other elite QB's in the league.

Wes Welker is 5'9".  His two favorite targets are TE's - granted they're both studs.  Their RB has more dreads than yards.  And he knows that every time they take the field on offense, he needs to score because their defense is suspect at best.

Brady played like a man with a chip on his shoulder as he led the Patriots in to Mile High to crush the Broncos, 41-23.  And Denver fans, don't look now but the Chargers are charging - haaard.

Sure, Tebow's line looked alright - 194 through the air, 93 on the ground and 2 TD's, 2 fumbles (1 lost), and only a 50% completion percentage.  But it shows this team cannot get into a pissing match with an offense that can score at will.  As good as their defense has looked against the likes of Chicago (without Cutler and Forte) or Minnesota (without AP), they can and will get shredded by an elite QB - Brady, Roethlisberger - or even an above-average QB like Flacco.  Or what about a stud running game that the Texans have with Foster and Tate?  If the Broncos go down early, it's tough for them to come back with a run-only type offense.

Sure, Tebow Time is saved until the last five minutes of the game, but if they're down it'll be a tough climb.

And if forced to stay in the pocket, Tebow struggles mightily.  I was driving to Holyoke to see a show (This Is Hell) and my buddy from high school Travis, and towards the end of the game, Tebow got sacked for a 29 yard loss.  29 YARDS!!  I almost swerved off the road I was in disbelief someone - anyone - could be sacked for a 29-yard loss.

Back to Brady - 320 yards, 2 TD's passing, one on the ground, 67% completion percentage - and he even managed to get Ochocinco in on the action before deciding to ignore him for the rest of the game.

Brady truly is the gold standard for QB's in the NFL.  Aaron Rodgers is a stud, so is Drew Brees, but the career Brady has had speaks for itself.

Oh, and he has one hell of a spike.

So when all is said and done, sorry Broncos fans, but I think your team is going to come up short once it gets in the playoffs - if they get there.

Remaining schedule for the AFC West:

Broncos (8-6) - at Buffalo, Kansas City
Raiders (7-7) - at Kansas City, San Diego
Chargers (7-7) - at Detroit, at Oakland

Looks like the Broncos will get it.  Unless the Chiefs decide to carry over their play from last weekends shocker over the Packers.  Or will the freefalling Bills decide to revert back to early season form and show up for their final home, against the Broncos.

We'll see what the shakedown is.

Tee It High, Let It Fly!!

I like golf.  I am not good at golf and the reason is simple - my clubs.  They're old.  (That's my excuse).

I need a new set of golf clubs - and I have been known to do my research.  Cleveland clubs are known to give you that "club up" you need without actually having to use a club up.  For me, I can use all the help I can get.

They are reasonably priced clubs for the average Joe like you and I and it's a brand name that is used by many professionals on tour - David Toms, youngster Cindy LaCrosse, David Howell, and Woody Austin, to name a few.

If you've ever heard the saying "drive for show, put for dough" you know how important golf putters can be.  I drive like garbage - straight, but not far - but I like to think I putt pretty well, namely because my black platinum belly putter from Cleveland feels awesome.  It's a definite upgrade over my previous putter - a mini-golf putter - and you really feel the ball off the club.

If you're in the market for some new clubs or even just a club, take a good hard look at Cleveland products.  I promise you will not be disappointed.  They've been around for over 30 years and have a variety of clubs that will certainly fit your golf game.

Cleveland Rocks!!

Maurice Jones-Drew - Making Chicken Salad from Chicken Shit

Despite the Jaguars dismal showing last night in Atlanta (where it's OK to lose) Maurice Jones-Drew remains the lone bright spot for this recently-sold franchise.  The oft-criticized and always undersized running back for the pathetic Jacksonville Jaguars is the best back in all the land.  And his team is 4-10.  Figure that one out.

He has always been regarded as a solid flex back (see: Matt Forte) - a guy who can ground and pound but can also come out of the backfield as a check down for his pathetic QB Blaine Gabbert.

It's incredible that the best running back in the league can come from such an inept offense.

I am going to make this a bullet-point post because I am so tired and run-down I don't think I can coherently form complete sentences.
MJD leads the league with 1,334 yards rushing (1,391 was his career best, in 2009)
  • MJD is 2nd shortest player in the league at 5'7" (Darren Sproles - 5'6")
  • MJD leads the NFL with 95.3 yards per game - almost two yards a game better than Fred Jackson (IR) and five yards better than McCoy (90.2).
  • MJD has 10 TD's (7 rushing, 3 receiving) - the rest of the offense has 12.
  • MJD has 294 carries on the year - 21 more than the next guy, Michael Turner.
  • MJD's 1,683 yards from scrimmage leads the league, although Ray Rice (1,622) will probably take over the top spot after Sunday.
  • MJD is 3rd in all-purpose yards (1,167 thanks for -16 yards fumble return) behind Darren Sproles (2,060) and Antonio Brown (1,837) - and MJD doesn't return kickoffs.
  • MJD has 1 tackle on the season.
If you reached through the Jaguars Christmas stocking this year, you'd find nothing but coal - but way at the bottom is the shiny diamond, Maurice Jones-Drew.  I wish he had some players around him who could execute so they could at least be competitive.  They won 41-14 last week over the Bucs and got pasted last night by the same score.  Odd.

You never hear anything bad or negative about this guy and that's why he's so likeable.  Not to mention he almost got my miserable "fantasy" team into the playoffs singlehandedly.  I guess my team on ESPN and his team are more similar than you'd think.

So Maurice Jones-Drew, you deserve better, so keep moving those legs.  You are a BEAST!!

Golf in the Winter? Sure!!

With this weather we've been experiencing here in the northeast, a few rounds of winter golf aren't out of the question.

I assume you've got your clubs but have you picked out the right golf balls?  I tend to use Srixon - they're relatively inexpensive and they last and last - for me anyway.  I am very inconsistent when it comes to golfing and sometimes I get a little angry - and a ball or two might get thrown into the woods or lake - but not a Srixon.  Tee it high and let it fly!

Here in the northeast - and judging by the weather forecasts I see on the news - anywhere else in the country, snow sometimes comes into play while golfing.  What better way to keep track of your ball than with some yellow golf balls - perfect contrast to the crisp white snow lining the rough.

Overall, Srixon makes a solid golf ball that actually extends my drive by 10-15 yards.  No joke.  I've used all sorts of golf balls and these actually go the farthest.  They're real soft around the green and controllable with my irons.  That's where I need it to be solid - from close range.  I'm not a big hitter (although with some more consistent play, I could be) so when I see Srixon balls on the shelf, I grab them.

I think people are too hung up with Titleist and Calloway - Srixon is where it's at.  Just ask 2011 PGA Championship winner Keegan Bradley about it.

Tebow Time > Colts Futility > Packers Greatness ???

It seems "Tebow Time" is the biggest story in the NFL this year.  I am happy the guy is having success, but whenever they win, it's because of him and no one else.  Von Miller, Elvis Dumervil, Matt Prater - these guys have a big role in the Broncos success as well but are only mentioned as an afterthought when people are done talking about Tim Tebow (which seems like never).

I've heard him speak in press conferences and I have yet to hear him mention how another player (besides God) made a great play in a big spot.

This is how the game goes:

1st, 2nd, 3rd quarters - Tebow lays eggs all day
4th quarter and overtime - he decides to show up

That's all well and good except why can't he figure out what the hell he's doing wrong in the first three quarters?

And all this talk of Tebow ultimately leads to one thing - religion.  Whenever he talks, it's about Jesus Christ or God or miracles - leave religion out of it, if you can.  Separate church and state (or in this case, faith and football).  I never hear any other athletes praising God or preaching their belief on dieties in their press conferences.  The whole "holier than thou" thing has got to be put on the backburner.  For once just credit the teammates who helped you instead of harping on God.

I'm no athiest and I believe God deserves his credit, but he didn't throw the TD pass, he didn't kick the 59-yard field goal, and he certainly would have showed up for the first 45 minutes of the game.

So Tebow, I'm happy for you, but it's like I'm at church listening to your pressers.  That's all.

GO RAIDERS!!!

On to other stories in the NFL:

The Colts inglorious run at the imperfect season is in tact and looking like a possibility more and more.  Oh for thirteen with the Titans, Texans, and Jaguars left.  Can they do it?

And the Packers are three games away from an undefeated regular season.  The Chiefs, Bears, and Lions are left on the slate - and they are a steamroller thus far.  I can't see them losing, but crazier things have happened (see: Tebow story above).

No one cares about these things because Tebow has taken over the globe.  He should join the GOP debates - he'd win for sure over Romney, Newt, and Perry.

I gotta go man.

Bet On It!

With Bowl Mania almost upon us, college hoops in full swing, the NHL season is rip-roaring, and the NFL playoffs right around the corner, what better time than now to start online sports betting.

For you NCAA Football fans, the first bowl game is in five days - FIVE!!!  The Temple Owls take on the Wyoming Cowboys in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl and that's just the tip of the iceberg for sports bettors.

If stay-at-home-dad was a well-paying job, I'd certainly open up an account and put some coin on some games, but it isn't, so I won't. But you can (as long as you're employed) and you should.

And now that Sid the Kid is back and people are seeming to care more about the NHL, why not throw some money on the Devils over the hapless Lightning - it is the only game on the slate tonight.

There are always a few NCAA Basketball games on the slate and for those of you fiending for an NFL game, there are games on Thursday for the next two weeks.

If you want comprehensive coverage and plenty of options on where to bet on sports, you won't be disappointed.

Remember, don't put your savings at risk, but have some fun with it!

Virgin Diaries - You're Kidding Me??

This show should be illegal and banned in 40 states, but in the meantime, I will watch sparingly and jaw-drop repeatedly.

The premise is simple - virgins who are looking forward to having sex or virgins dating.  And it's quite disturbing and funny at the same time.

The trailer video shows you all you need to know to really grasp what's being portrayed on the show.  Not to mention the creepy "priest" or "reverend" overseeing the wedding.  Enjoy.

Oh, and be sure to watch on an empty stomach.

10 years?!?

The Marlins' Jeffrey Loria seems to be playing the role of Santa Claus this offseason, throwing a reported $200+ million and 10 years at Albert Pujols.  The websites say he is going to be 32 in January, but I am not so sure of it.  I would ask to see the dudes birth certificate before offering him 10 years.  The most notable 10 year contract isn't panning out so well - it's a guy from Miami - Alex Rodriguez.

And people are saying the Mets Jose Reyes Era ended when he signed with the Marlins.  Since when did no world series and numerous trips on the DL result in an era?  David Wright is the face of that franchise.  Saying it was the Jose Reyes Era is like saying it was the Brady Anderson Era in Baltimore in the late 1990's.  Sure. Reyes was the spark plug for the Mets but he was never the face of the franchise.

I just am having a hard time with this 10 years, $200+ million.  I wish I had that money to throw around.

Loria better take a look at the Eagles and how their "Dream Team" turned out - they just got pumped by the Seahawks on Thursday night.

And the Miami Marlins' new logo, uniform, and hat is brutal.

Durk Star

A friend of mine from back in the day began his blog, chronicling (man is that a weird word to type) his journey back to "Durkdom" - he packed on some lbs. but is rejuvenating his life, one day at a time.  He's not fat, by any means, but I think he wants to get back in "game shape".  He's a killer hockey player (I couldn't even control the ball when we played roller hockey but I tended to tip it his way for an easy assist) and a good dude to boot, so follow his blog - http://oldbloodblog.blogspot.com/ - even if you hate me or sports, I am sure his content will keep you laughing and might even inspire you.

As for me, well I am going to pick up my telescope in a few hours so I can start stargazing a little more seriously.

Looking forward to it.

Also headed down to NYC this weekend to hang out with our good friends the Pulidore's - headed to dinner Saturday night and then a night of fun.  Sunday, Lindsay and I are going to the Chiefs/Jets game only because we won two tickets and a parking pass.  I can care less the outcome of the game but it'll be fun to get out for a few days.

My parents are headed up our way to tend to the little guy and Nathan.  I'm sure they're excited.

Later!

Star Gazing and Sloth

Last night I downloaded Google Sky Map for my phone and was outside after I got home from the gym checking out the stars above.  It gives you a pretty pinpoint location of where they are, but with the naked eye, who knows if I'm looking at the right things.

Anyway, I checked out Castor and Pollux, the two brightest stars in Gemini, from inside my kitchen.  They were right there, two bright stars.  Pretty amazing if you think about it.

On to the gym.  The parking lot is a disaster.  There are really no designated spots, so I park all the way in the back of the building where few people venture.  The rest of them seem to park as close to the entrance as possible.  Now isn't the whole point of the gym to get in shape?  Where's the harm in parking a little farther from the entrance to prevent creating a maze to navigate through?

It really chaps my ass.

That's life and that's why nearly a third of American adults is obese.  Surprisingly enough, Connecticut is the third least obese state at 22.5% (Colorado is 21% and Nevada is 22.4%).

Healthy steps.

Astronomy - it's wild

If I recall correctly, I got a D in astronomy while in college.  I took it thinking it'd be a class that wasn't that serious and it's bring my GPA up a bit.  This wasn't the case - I got a D.

Recently, however, I've been a bit obsessed with the sky and the stars and planets up there - probably because now that we live in the "country", I can actually see what's up there.

I've been researching telescopes for beginners, astrophotographic telescopes - hell, I even downloaded a free app (GoSkyWatch Planetarium) for my iPad (the first one, without the camera) so that I could slightly understand what I was looking it.  With the naked eye, it's a bit challenging though.

I literally can't stop Google-ing things related to astronomy - "best celestial views from CT", "best telescopes for beginners under $100", "best stars views from the northern hemisphere" - to name a few.

Like I said, I'm using my eyes and although I have pretty solid vision, I still want to be able to see the surface of the moon, deep sky objects, constellations, stars, and other planets.  I'm not too concerned with alien life form, unless ALF himself is somewhere out there in Melmac.  That brown guy ruled!

If there is anyone out there with a telescope they are willing to part with - either for free or a nominal fee - let me know.  I'll be damned if I'm going to fork over a few hundred bucks.  There are several online I am vigorously researching though.

Thanks and happy stargazing.

Greg White, #24 on the pitch, #1 in your hearts

I know most of you have heard of rugby before.  Something, rather someone, you've probably never heard of, is Gregory White, a rear winger for the only French team competing for the 2011 Championship.  Dude is a beast - offensively and defensively.

He wears number 24 on the pitch for French Rugby League squad, Toulouse Olympique, and most of the time, opponents are looking at just that, the number on his back as he's scoring five.

In the Rugby League Championship 2011, he can often be seen scoring all over the place.  He plays like a mad man and never stops hustling.  He's a team player too, not like Ndamukong Suh of the Lions.  He isn't selfish and will make the next pass for a teammate who's got a better chance.

After checking out some video of this Greg White, I think I am going to start tracking him a little more closely.

I suggest you do the same!

Gym Etiquette

Before I begin this brief post, the word 'etiquette' is one of the most confusing words I've ever written.  I think it's the first time I've ever tried spelling it but man, it's a doozy.

Moving on...

At the gym last night - I joined a local gym and have every intention of becoming less of a slug - it seems I missed the memo that went out to members that sleeves were NOT to be worn.  Seemingly every one there had no sleeves on.

- the old man with very, very loose arm skin
- the guy who cannot wipe his own ass because he is so massive
- a young woman who also had on spandex that were begging to rip
- a kid with jeans on
- some young punk with his left arm in a sling (not sure why he was there to begin with)

I am headed over there again after we read Nolan a bedtime story and put him down.  It's a legs day.

Bye now.

Moving Home

Guest written by our friend Gladys Fuentes

All of my extended family lives in Corpus Christi so after 10 years of being away, I’ve decided to move back home. I’ve lived in Arkansas since I came here for college. I wasn’t ready to go back to Texas after I graduated so I found a job and stuck around. Now that I’m getting older, I find myself missing my parents, cousins, aunt and uncles more. I’ve already lined up a new job to start in a month and found a house to rent. Next stop will be the internet to line up utilities for the new house. My dad suggested I search for Corpus Christi electricity providers to find an electric company. I’ll also need phone, cable, internet, water . . . The list goes on and on! I had forgotten how much energy and effort goes into a move, especially a long distance one. At least I don’t have to do it by myself. With my family these I will have someone to meet all the different utility personnel at the house for installation before I arrive. It will be nice to arrive at my new home and it have all the amenities in working order!

How Can LeAnn Rimes See?

Every picture I see of this woman when she smiles makes me think of the same thing - "How the hell is she able to see where she's going when she smiles?"

Sure, my eyes close a little when I smile but nothing like this.  Here's a few pictures I've found on the Internet and tell me if you agree or not.  If I were here, I'd stop walking before I attempted to smile.
I guess she really loves smiling.  And not eating apparently - every picture I see now reminds me of a hanger.

Four Way Stop

With the recent blackout here in the state of Connecticut, the traffic scene turned into an almost New York style feel, and people here still have no idea how to drive.

All traffic lights were down when the power went out, naturally, and this brought about a bit of a conundrum for most people:

Do I race through the intersection with no working traffic lights or Do I treat it as a 4-way stop?

This is a fairly easy answer, you'd think, but there was a few times when I almost got rocked - correction - almost rocked someone else (my Blue '98 Mercury Mountaineer is a BEAST!).

The concept of stopping and letting the person to the right go first (as long as they were there first) was foreign to some.

It happened again today, on Hartford Tpke. - but did people treat is as a 4-way stop since the blackout was a warmup of sorts?  Nope.

Almost saw a few wrecks.

Headed over to Gampel tonight to watch the men's team raise the NCAA Championship banner to the roof as they take on Columbia.

Post-Blackout Black Eye

I'm back up and running after a 9 day blackout here in the greater Hartford area.

Four line crews came barreling in around 8pm Sunday night (our power went out the previous Saturday at 11:45pm) looking to do some work - FINALLY!!  Twenty minutes later, power (and order) was restored.  They sent two buckets up the pole, took out a fuse, put in a new one, pushed it into place and POW - power.

I went inside and did a little dance.  You think having power for a day or two sucks, ha.  You have no idea.  We stayed at 7 different places over the course of the blackout.  SEVEN!  Talk about a whirlwind.

What turned out to be the biggest story since power has been restored?  Well I'll tell you Kris Humphries and Kim Kardashian are thrilled it ain't them - it's a sex scandal at Penn State.

Joe Paterno is out.  The athletic director is out.  The president is out.  What a shitstorm this whole thing is and it totally tarnished a brilliant coaching career by a man with 409 victories - more than anyone else in the history of college football? (besides John Gagliardi).

Truth be told, he didn't say something eleven years ago - which is dispicable a damn shame.  He could have ended this whole thing back then but chose not to - terrible judgement on his part.

Jerry Sandusky is a piece of shit and should rot in hell (or jail) for the rest of his life.  Joe Paterno - he'll live in his own jail for the rest of his life knowing he could have done something but didn't.

I cannot believe this story.  It has nothing to do with sports and for those of you trying to make it a sports story are mistaken - this is a sick and twisted sex scandal created by a man in a power position - assistant football coach for the Penn State Nittany Lions.  He was often seen with 10- or 11-year-olds at bowl games, camps, practices - and no one saw any issues with this?  Oh that's right, he had his "Second Mile" program - basically a recruiting tool to feed his child-sex habit.  I am going to puke talking about this anymore, so I am done.

Just like Penn State football and Joe Paterno's reputation.

They're shredding trees outside making me think that this nap I just put Nolan down for is going to be short lived.

Toothpaste

I just cracked open a travel sized tube of Crest Total toothpaste and I just want to vent.

The aftertaste is miserable, totally ruining my brushing experience.  While brushing, it tastes a little minty, but once you're through, it's just pasty.  And gross.

Every single type of toothpaste should be flavored - whether it be cinnamon, mint, chocolate, cherry - I can care less.  I would rather use a pea-tasting toothpaste than this Crest crap I am using.

Once the snow subsides (tomorrow), I might have to go out and buy a new tube of cinnamon flavored toothpaste.

Am I alone on this idea that every toothpaste should be flavored?

Oriental Rugs

Is it me or is every single brick-and-mortar "Oriental Rugs" store a) going out of business or b) having a 70% off sale?

I shit you not, every single one I drive by, whether it's Kaoud Oriental Rugs, J. Namnoun, or Safavieh, they all have sales or going out of business signs in their windows.

I have never gone into one of these stores, but I can imagine the supply far exceeds the demand for imported rugs in this economy.  They all have wesbites (well, most do) but they offer absolutely no information about the pricing.  That's how they suck you in to the physical stores, I guess.  It hasn't worked on me.

I'm guessing they offer more than the typical ugly-ass Oriental rug design that we all think of when we hear those two words together, but still, how the hell can a store operate selling only rugs?!?

I might stop in the next time I pass one, which seems to be every day, just to see what they're all about.  But only if they're offering at least 70% off prices.

A&E TV

I was up the other night watching television in bed - yes, I can do that again now that Nolan has his own room to sleep in and Lindsay and I no longer have to creep around our bedroom.

Anyway, I was flipping though the channels (because Lindsay was asleep already) and stopped on "American Hoggers" - a show I had never even heard of.  Captivating television.

It's a family-owned, family-operated boar capturing business.  It takes place down in Texas, where wild, feral boars often run rampant, causing chaos and terrorizing farms and families.

Apparently, Jerry, the patriarch of this hogging brood, is a legend in the hog hunting game.  He could also be a stand in for ZZ Top.  His son Robert is 28 and can often be heard yelling at the old man, who seems to be a bit nuts.  Jerry also has his 23-year-old daughter Krystal "Pistol" in on the capturing as well.  They travel all over the Lone Star State hunting and trapping these hogs, using several dogs who wear flak-jackets to protect them from the wild hogs.  FYI, the dogs (Walker Hounds, the best trapping dogs out there) lay into these hogs when they catch them.  Jerry's wife, Kathie, packs the coolers for the trips.  And a friend of the family, Leah Penick, travels with them because she's an accomplished horsewoman, whatever that means.

The best part was the closed captioning on the bottom of the screen while the old man spoke, which was imperative because I couldn't understand a word he said.  OK, maybe that's a bit dramatic, but it was funny as shit hearing some of the slang and terminology he uses when referring to hogs.

Wednesday nights at 10/9C on A&E you can catch "American Hoggers" - I promise you, if you're a fan of the new wave of reality television - family reality - you will not want to miss this one.

Trust me.

Scrub a dub dub

Have you ever seen a nurse or doctor running errands around town in their scrubs?  How comfortable do those things look?  Warm, no, but relaxing and free, absolutely.

I always wondered where to buy them.  Look no further - http://www.blueskyscrubs.com/categories/Scrubs/Scrubs-for-Women/.

I went here and began searching, but for scrubs for men, obviously.  And if you want to know where to buy cheap scrubs, you can stop looking.

You want red scrubs?  Got it covered.  You want black scrubs with a white stitched pocket?  Check.

Who knew there was a comprehensive site out there that offered so many different types of scrubs.  There's kids scrubs, jackets, caps, earrings, lanyards - almost anything you can think of.

Don't just take my word for it, check it out yourself.  I know some of my readers wear scrubs and others might know people who do, so let them know.  This is the place you want to go for scrubs.

Again, if I had some money and a little better use for scrubs, I might order myself a pair.  I think I'll just have to wait a while until I get a job that brings in a little bit of money - stay-at-home-dad is a very rewarding job (and one where I could wear scrubs if I wanted) but there isn't much income.

Happy scrubbing!

Prognostications

Have you recently made a prediction?  I make them every week when the NFL games come out, and many times, I'm wrong.  But it doesn't stop me.

I often predict endings in movies or television shows, or at concerts which songs will be played during the encore.  Predictions are endless and everyone makes them.

Last night, for example - I would have bet money on the Ravens beating the Jaguars (if I had any) and I would have been wrong.  Does that mean I am done predicting what I think will happen?  Absolutely not.

Here's my latest prediction - Rangers in six.

A lot of money is made and lost on predictions - it's called gambling.  But there's nothing wrong with a friendly wager on whether or not something will happen, even if it's not money.  A beer at the bar if this guy strikes out, a shot if he gets on base.  Anything can be predicted.

Except the end of the world, where some nut job decided he'd let New Yorkers know the world was going to end by buying billboards and signs in the subway tunnels.  Turns out he was wrong and shouldn't have spent his life savings on said billboards.

Do you make predictions?  Even if they are totally ridiculous, I bet there's at least one other person out there who agrees or disagrees with what you're predicting.

Nolan is sleeping right now and I'm guessing he'll wake up within the next 15 minutes - and cry until he gets changed and fed.

Check out my latest prediction (seen above) and make your own.

Two Wheel Drive

I said it several years ago to Lindsay - "I want a motorcycle!" (namely a Harley).  She looked at me like I was crazy, but it's a dream of mine to own and ride a Hog, like Wild Hogs, but not quite like that.

I have done extensive research on which bikes I like and what visually appeals to me.  They're pretty expensive and should I come into some money, might be something I entertain - after I get a more practical SUV for myself so I can drive my family around in.

But if I want to build one from the ground up, as both my uncles have done at one time or another, I'm going to have to research where to find motorcycle parts.  There are plenty of auto salvage yards around me here in Connecticut that I can check out and there's also a bunch of websites that I can check out.  Every time I've ever been to Canada, the prices on things have been cheaper, so I might have to check that out should this opportunity ever present itself.

For now though, I'm in a DIY mood, and have been for a while.  Sadly, I haven't had the chance to do anything myself because we were prepping for our escape from NY to the quiet corner of Connecticut.

The rules of riding are weird here in CT though.  In New York, you need to wear a helmet.  In Connecticut, all you need is a pair sunglasses.  Doesn't really make a whole lot of sense - last time I checked, a pair of shades isn't going to protect your melon from the pavement.

Anyway, I am going to check out some parts online for a few while the kid naps.

Safe riding!

Football and Football (soccer)

There are those of us who enjoy a few games on Sunday and those that enjoy a match on Sunday.

Me personally, I prefer the NFL to the MLS or UEFA or whatever it is.  And there's thousands of people, probably millions, that have custom football jerseys with their name and number on them.  I am not one of them - but the thought of getting football jerseys customized has crossed my mind.  Instead, I went for a Fred Biletnikoff #25 Oakland Raiders jersey.  I'd rather not walk around with my name on the back of a Raiders jersey, but that's not to say you shouldn't want your name blasted across the back.

You also see a lot of high school football on television, and I'm sure there's parents out there who get their sons high school football jerseys customized.  Shoot, I might be one of them in a number of years when Nolan grows up a little.  First though, would be customizing a youth football jersey - but I'd get his number on it, not mine.  He'd be my favorite player!

For those who prefer the pitch and the rioting in the crowds during international "friendlies", soccer jerseys might be more up your alley.  Soccer uniforms and jerseys are a huge phenomenon ever since the US went pretty deep in the last World Cup.  I was in Dallas and was watching it at a local dive cantina.  Had a lot of fun with the wife though.

The one thing I have never seen is youth soccer jerseys though, but I guess without a child who'd be playing soccer, that's probably par for the course.  I know there's a million and one different combinations and patters and colors to choose from, and minus all the littering from sponsors, team soccer jerseys would be pretty cool.  I just can't get over the fact that unless you make it yourself, which you certainly can do, it's like you watching a match with a bunch of running and flopping billboards.

But regardless of which football you prefer, you are certainly able to customize it however you see fit.  But not me, I will stick with the classic silver #25 on the black jersey.

NYC to CT

Attention readers - I have been on the lam lately because of an impending life change.  I am not coming out of the closet, I am a happily married man with a great son and awesome dog.

We are moving to Connecticut because my wife took a new job.  I am excited for the move and for a fresh start in a new state.

We've been in the Bronx for the past six years and it's like we've been in a rut for the past three or four.  I've been a Bronx resident for four years of college and six years as a college baseball coach.  I am no longer in college and am no longer a college baseball coach, and the time is right to move on.

We're looking forward to raising the little guy in a more rural setting - there isn't really much green grass here in the Bronx for him to enjoy.  Our new place has two bedrooms, so Nolan will finally get his own place to sleep and play.  And oddly enough, I am looking forward to decorating the new place as nice as I can.  HomeGoods is right up the block from our new place, as is a TJ Maxx, Wal-Mart and K-Mart - all great places for a discount.

As for Nathan, he has gotten some ticks the past few times we went to Connecticut but it's nothing a tick collar won't handle.  There's also a dog run 45 feet from our door so he'll get to enjoy the freedom he has experienced at the dog parks here in NYC.

I am having fun posting over on my other blog - Postgame Vigilante - but I know where most of my following started - right here on WRT.

I will be back in full force once the move is complete and we are all settled in.

Bx20

This must be some bus route. I think I'll stay off this.

We're moving north to Connecticut anyway. I'm sure there's a few of those up there too.

Drugs are bad,  mmmkay.

Boooo!

I am not sad, in fact, I am pretty pumped up to go pumpkin picking with Nolan for the first time.

There will be pictures taken.

Happy Halloween!!

Bet On It

Now that baseball season is officially over for me (the Yankees were eliminated because of their inept offense), it's on to college football, NFL, and even some NHL.

I've written about it before, but if you're into online sports betting then there's a plethora of sites to check out.

All or most are off-shore since online gaming is illegal in the states, I think, but some of these sites almost want you to win money.

Take NFL games, for example.  There are sites that will give you matchups, weather, injuries, previews, odds from all sorts of sports books, and even predictions for the entire slate of NFL games.

If I wasn't unemployed - I am a stay-at-home-dad - I'd put some cash into a site and bet a little bit.  Why the hell not?

Although the more I think about it, the more I look at my fantasy football team and think twice.

But if you're feeling lucky and want to throw some cash on some NHL games or some NCAA football games, do your homework before dumping money into some of these sites.

Good luck and happy gaming.  I'm going to stick to my miserable fantasy football team.  More like misery football for me.

Surf's Up, Dude!

Here's to an article pertaining to something I've never even attempted - surfing.

In order to surf winters around these parts, I'm assuming you need to get your hands on some pretty good wetsuits.  And what better company than Body Glove - I mean they even make cases for cell phones now - I actually have one.  It's like a wetsuit for your phone, except I don't think it's waterproof.

Anyway, surfing is something I've always wanted to try but have never really had the guts - or time - do.  Maybe with my pending move to Connecticut I will entertain my desire to surf.  I doubt there's many places to really go inland but maybe something along the coast.  Although the more I think about it, Long Island (where I'm from) is a pretty good jumping off point to learn to surf and since I've never really been inspired, I'll probably never go.  But...

A few of my buddies surf and they use Body Glove wetsuits and rave about them - no scratches, no sores, no bruises, no problem.  They're almost so convincing that I want to buy one and just wear it around.

If I ever get the cojones to go, I certainly will, but for now I'll settle for mobile products.

Hang 10, and when you do, be sure to get yourself into a Body Glove wetsuit.

Later, dudes!!

Let's Go Bowling!!!

I'm talking college football you goofs.  I have never been to a bowl game but I can imagine tha atmosphere.

It's got to be crazy, your favorite team in what is as close to a playoff as possible, the stadium is split down the middle with fans from both sides.  There's bowl games and then there's bowl game.

The Fiesta Bowl is one of the best, although last years was a blowout, with Oklahoma pounding UConn, 48-20.  Fiesta Bowl Tickets must be tough to come by, but with a little help, you might be able to get your hands on them.

Orange Bowl Tickets are always a hot commodity too - great weather in winter time always attracts the crowds.  Not to mention when past MVP's from this game include Andrew Luck, Matt Leinert, and Carson Palmer.  Get it!

Then you've got to try to get your hands on some Rose Bowl Tickets - talk about atmosphere.  Pasadena, baby!  A parade for the game.  And matchups like USC and Penn St., Oregon and Ohio St., and TCU ad Wisconsin.  Get out west and see this one.

And scoring Chick-fil-a Bowl Tickets can be tough, with teams like Florida State, South Carolina, LSU Auburn, and Tennessee all being past participants.  Who wouldn't want to catch some of the best teams in the country in this one?

Finally, trying to get Cotton Bowl Tickets is a fete in itself.  Ole Miss, Oklahoma St., Arkansas, and Missouri all have played in this one, played down at Jerry World, home of the Cowboys.

So get your hands on these tickets before they're gone.  I am seriously considering checking out one of these games this year, and so should you.

I HATE Radio

We drove up to Vernon, CT from Long Island this morning to check out places.  Then we drove back from Vernon, CT to the Bronx.  We stopped over in Hartford for a late lunch at the Trumbull Kitchen, which was awesome.

The FM radio was on most of the trip until I almost had a breakdown - I then switched over to ESPN Radio 1050.  Yes, traffic was bad, but it wasn't because of that.

The reason for the near breakdown was because the same five songs get played on every radio station in the greater NY area - and I can't take it anymore.

I actually used to like some of the songs, but after today, I fucking despise them.  I will turn them off immediately upon hearing the first few chords.

#1 - Adele - "Someone Like You" - I like her entire album and can listen to "Rolling in the Deep" 1,000 times and not get sick of it but when this song comes on, I want to stick a screwdriver in my ears.

#2 - Maroon 5 - "Moves Like Jagger" - Adam Levine is awesome but this song was on 6 different radio stations within a ten minute span.  It made me want to pull over and rip the radio out of the car.

#3 - Foster the People - "Pumped Up Kicks" - I hated this song before I even liked it and I'm back on the Hate Boat.

#4 - Pitbull - "Give Me Everything" - Never really liked this guy but his songs are pretty catchy.  This one, however, got dropped.

That's my rant for the day.  I know different songs are played on different stations throughout the country, but I'm sure you all have songs you cannot stand.

This is my Forgettable Four.

R(e)ally

While watching the Phillies fans writhe in pain and agony with their team losing in the ninth to the Cardinals last night, the TV cameras panned in to a guy with a rally cap on.

There is no reason a grown ass man should find the need to turn his hat inside out and put it back on his head.  Are there some magical spells that you can cast that no one else has figured out yet?  Is your hat the hat that is going to spark a turnaround?

It just looks ridiculous.  I like the effort and your heartfelt desire for your team to succeed, but a rally cap is not going to do a think.  Especially when you're the only one in the section with said cap on.

Take this guy for example:
He's so far away the rally cap effect doesn't even reach the field.

Occasionally you see the players in the dugout doing it, and that's a little less ridiculous, because they actually can help determine the outcome.

Fans, stick with wearing the cap properly - forward and straight with a little bend in the brim.

Good day.

Moneyball

I never read the book and haven't seen the movie (is it even out yet?) but it is on my short list - along with getting a job.  I am still muddling my way through Keith Richards' book Life but the next one I read will be Michael Lewis's Moneyball.

I watch daytime talk shows nowadays while I stay home with Nolan and Brad Pitt was on quite a bit last week along with Billy Beane promoting the new movie.

I have been an A's fan for a while and was always kind of wondering how Beane did what he did - even though they've never really won anything in the "moneyball era" but nonetheless, I am intrigued.

So, this is just a short blurb letting you know you should read and/or see Moneyball.  Ellen let all her audience see it before it came out - 98% of which were women - and they all enjoyed it.  I mean Brad Pitt is in it, but still.

Time to get going.

Oh damn, look at that Minivan

One of the few perks about living in the Bronx is a sight seen day after day after day - pimped out minivans.

Just yesterday, I saw a 2002 Ford Windstar parked on the road.  It had chrome rims, dark tints, and a dude in it pumping out Lil' Wayne beats for all the Bronx to hear.

Unfortunately, I don't always have a reaction time quick enough to take a photo of said minivans, but I wanted to copy and paste a few pictures of minivans I found on the Internet.  As far as I'm concerned, no amount of tint, chrome, or bass can make a minivan any cooler to drive.

These people who've souped up theirs, they must think otherwise.

Red Rocket version
Pointy Rims version
Honda Odd-yssey
You tell  me readers, are these things any cooler to drive because they are pimped out with tints, big wheels, or spoilers?

I say no.

PIX Morning News 7A-9A

Just wanted to point out that Channel 11 news went to their commercial break with some atypical music played on morning news boradcasts - the Beastie Boys' "No Sleep til Brooklyn" - which I thought was very cool.

I will not, however, watch the news because those two crows are simply unwatchable.

I stick to Today and if I need a good laugh, Good Day New York.  I feel like GDNY has no script and they just kind of fly by their pants, which is entertaining and hard to watch at the same time.

Paper Chase (ACC, Pac-16, Big East...)

Looks like everyone is trying to get out of the Big East - Syracuse and Pittsburgh both parted ways over the weekend in favor of the ACC.  It really came as a total shock to me, probably because I don't have any insider information.

It's looking like there are shaping up to be four mega-conferences.

The Pac-16 would shape up something like this:

PAC-16
Pod One - Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech
Pod Two - Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, Utah
Pod Three - Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, Washington State
Pod Four - USC, UCLA, California, Stanford

Are you kidding me?

UConn, as recent as an hour ago, has reportedly been throwing around the idea of joining the ACC, Big Ten, or a merger with the Big 12.  Rutgers is also in talks with joining the ACC.  If these two joined as well, here's what the ACC might look like:

ACC
Northern Division:  UConn, Rutgers, Syracuse, Boston College, Pittsburgh, Maryland, Virginia, Virginia Tech
Southern Division:  Miami, Florida State, Duke, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, NC State, Clemson, Wake Forest

Is it me of weren't five of those eight once members of the same conference?  The Big East!

Coach K says the addition of Pitt and Syracuse is "pretty exciting" - probably in part because the entire preseason NCAA Basketball Top 10 could be ACC schools.

It's all seemingly coming down to one thing - the almighty dollar (or many millions and millions of them).
It's a sad thing losing some of these rivalries but after all is said and done, it's one giant paper chase.

It seems like when it shakes down, the teams that defected from other conferences will once again be pitted in a "Division" with the same teams they shared their previous conference with, which is ridiculous.

I remain confused over all the talk and what the hell is going on.

Greed killed the cat.

Auburn at Clemson; NCAAF

Clemson just scored a loooooong TD to take a 28-21 lead over Auburn, a team I have grown to hate.

Right out of the gate after halftime, BOOM, a 65-yard TD to freshman WR Sammy Watkins, who's a burner.  He's already gone for 121 yards on seven catches.

Auburn's defense looks like Swiss cheese and I'm loving it.  It's a hostile environment down there in Death Valley and I'm hoping the nations longest winning streak will come to an end today.

In other games, former UConn coach Randy Edsall and his Terrapins are having a rough go at home against #18 West Virginia, trailing 34-10 early in the third quarter.

Penn State looks awful on the "road" against Temple, trailing 10-7 late in the third quarter.  Joe Pa needs to be on the sideline motivating these guys, if he can still do that.

Pitt is all over Iowa, in Iowa City, 17-3, with five minutes left in the third.

Michigan is at the Big House and is mauling Eastern Michigan, 21-3.  EMU had a 3-0 lead before Michigan ripped off 21 straight points.

Georgia looks good - against Coastal Carolina - leading 28-0 with hopes of getting their first win of the year after two tough losses (#5 Boise State beat them 35-21 before #12 South Carolina beat them 45-42 in a thriller) at home.

Time to get our stuff ready to head to Long Island.  My father had his 54th birthday Friday and we're gonna go have dinner and watch the premier game of the day, #1 Oklahoma at #5 Florida State.

Outrage

Apparently, the residents of New Jersey are going to have to foot the GTL bill for the cast of Jersey Shore.  This country is out of control, but if you ask the mayor of Seaside Heights, NJ, he is all for it.

Hat Wearing 101

Tim Tebow was never taught how to wear a baseball cap.  Not a cowboy hat or a fedora, a simple baseball cap.

Here was the look on the sidelines - as he should be for the season - in the Broncos season-opening loss to my RAIDERS!!

Clean it up Timmy.
What up, yo?

The Real Dream Team: Father’s & Son’s

This is a guest post from my buddy over at Shell Shock Serenade.  He reminisced a bit about growing up and the role sports plays in a father and son's life together.  The dude has been through a lot, including raising two kids by himself for 10 years.  Give his blog a read and follow him up, it's life-altering stuff and he really helps you appreciate the things you have.

Some of the most vivid childhood memories that I have involve a baseball, a ball glove and my dad. Sometimes they included our neighbor across the street Mr. Geise…but most times not. But ALWAYS…there was my father, “the Old Man”, Pawps…that larger then life fellow (In reality too, he was 6’4” and 245lbs!) who was my role model and my hero…and he still is.

We would stand in the front yard at that house on Lambourne Ave. in the Columbus, Ohio suburb of Worthington, where I grew up, chucking the baseball back and forth, seemingly for hours. Then as leaves turned and weather grew chilly, out came the football…dad and I running play after pre-planned pass play in that very same front yard, he at Quarterback and myself at wide receiver…that front yard to me one day would be Crosley Field (where the Cincinnati Reds played ball at the time)  and the next day was Cleveland Stadium (Where the Cleveland Browns played) followed Ross-Ade Stadium where the Purdue Boilermaker Football Team played. It was anything but…my front yard!

Get the impression that sports were an important part of my family life? They most definitely were and I shudder to think how I might have grown up if they weren’t. And always at the center of my sports activity was my Dad…

He had been a good enough to be a 2nd Team All State High School Basketball Player at Dayton Kentucky High (right across the Ohio River from Cincinnati) that he played scholarship basketball as a Center/Forward at Michigan State as a Freshman, before he tore up his knee ending his basketball career. He then went to school at Purdue University (hence our family’s loyalty to Purdue) where his father had just gotten a job in the Administration. He continued to play sports at an intramural level and for fun, all through college, while in the Army and then long after…eventually passing on the love of sport to his only son.

We attended many a Reds Baseball game, reveling in the Glory years of the Big Red Machine: Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, George Foster, Tony Perez, Davey Conception, Ken Griffey (senior) and Cesar Geronimo…al my heroes! We went to Purdue Basketball and Football games….it was ritual to watch college football on the days we were not at a game on TV or listen to them on the radio (this being the era before cable sports television).

I played all sorts of little league sports as a boy and my father was always there as well, even though as a salesman he traveled a great deal. Often he wouldn’t get in until late Friday night after I had gone to bed but by the time my soccer or football or baseball game started at 8am the following morning….there he’d be, watching his boy.

But the real fun to me was throwing the ball back and forth in that old front yard. That was the best memory of all…just my dad and I together, a Dream Team for all time, spending countless hours together, rain, shine or snow…throwing a football or baseball together. That will always be the everlasting memory of my father and I…

And that legacy continued…if you fast forward to the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, you will see another father and son, in the front yard of an old brick farmhouse outside of Holland, Michigan. And they will be chucking the football or baseball back and forth just like my dad and I had done over 30 years before.

And honestly, those are the best memories I’ve had so far with my own son Ian…were it rain or shine, everyday after work/school, we’d be there in an imaginary Ross-Ade Stadium, running pass play after pass play…..now with yours truly at Quarterback and my son Ian at wide Receiver.…just like my father and I used to do.

It’s funny how often I think about those times I spent with my father and my son. How important those times together really were. How closely we bonded and how the relationships we have with each other to this very day were forged in those front yards and watching ball games together at the Ball Park somewhere or at home in front of the TV.

My son, now in his mid 20’s and I still throw the ball back and forth together when we are together…what can I say…family traditions die hard! And when we do, it doesn’t take much to just close my eyes and I can still hear the echoes of ball slapping leather from that far off time, where another father and son were getting to know each other in that very, same special way…..sharing a love for sports, spending time together and each other.

New Layout for Blogger; Raiders

Even though my bud Thom over at SSS posted almost two weeks ago about the new layout in Blogger, I felt compelled to respond.

Personally, I think the streamlined look is pretty easy on the eyes.  I also think my fantasy football team sucks - yes, after just one week.

I think the dropdown menu allowing you to access every aspect of your blog is an excellent addition as well.

Raiders 13 - Broncos 3.  Don't screw this one up.  :32 seconds before the half and Denver is marching.  INT!!!  13-3 at the half on the road ain't bad.

The one thing they need to address as far as updating and modernizing is the "Add Gadget" feature - it looks so antiquated when you're searching for them and lately - maybe it's my computer - but the picture icons aren't loading up.

So Thor, there you have it.  Guest stop over at PV?

Never Forget!; New Endeavor

NEVER FORGET!  Thank a civil servant, cop, fireman, pilot, and any miltary you come across in your daily journey.  It might not mean a lot to them everytime, but everyone likes to know they're appreciated.

I am starting a new blog on the blogger platform - Postgame Vigilante - in honor of the beginning of the NFL season.  It will deal with the NFL season, the NCAA season, the remainder of the MLB season, college hoops when it comes around, college sports, and whatever else has a postgame.

I will include another new idea of mine which will be displayed from time to time.

I will continue to post here on WRT but am trying out something new.  Stay with me and sorry for the hiatus.  I am still in the process of finding a new job, so being a stay-at-home-dad is both enjoyable and very time consuming.  Hopefully sometime very soon, I will have a lead on a job.  I can only hope.

Great to be back though.  Hope everyone is well and my throng of followers will still be in touch.

Thanks again!

Ryan

The Gambler

If you're anything like me, you don't have a whole hell of a lot of money to blow at the casino, but if I do go to the casino, I will mosey on by some slot machines - yep, the one-arm banditos.  Last time I gambled, up at Mohegan Sun, I played some nickel slots as well as some penny slots, and even came out on top a few bucks.

Online, there are so many sites to try, but Poker Sites USA is one of the best to search for the one that fits your needs and wants.  It's got links to Sportsbooks, Texas Hold 'Em, slots - anything you can imagine.

Then there's Online Casinos for USA Players.  A lot of the sportsbooks are located overseas, and that isn't really an issue as far as payouts go, but the challenge is always finding a good site that is trusted, to use.  Me, fantasy football is my landlocked vice.  I play for no money, but it's still pretty fun.

Best US Poker Sites is also a good one - right off the home page you can get to a sportsbook (BoDog), a poker site (Carbon Poker), and a virtual casino (Broadway Tables).  They say variety is the spice of life, then this site must be said spice.

Soooooo, in closing, if you're looking for a good site to gamble with - and right now, football season is starting so I'm sure people are looking for ways to bet on games - check out the three sites above.  They are all legit and give you plenty of options.

Good luck and happy winnings!

Irene

Just started on some mimosas in anticipation of Hurricane Irene. Landfall here in NY will probably be somewhere around 7pm I think. Who knows?

Wishing everyone a safe hurricane.  Cheers!

Derf!

Just saw a guy who looked like he just got done at the gym blowing into a Granny Smith apple. I thought it was a post workout snack.

He was clearing out a hole in said apple and promptly met his "hook up" in a white Sentra. He got out with a bag of dope and smoked the apple.

What a champion!

I didn't get the head coaching job at my alma mater and resigned. I would like to think something better will happen to me in the near future. I was bummed at first but got over it. Things happen for a reason. For the time being,  I'm staying home with Nolan and Nathan. Not too bad, I just hope something comes along soon.

Oh, and eat an apple a day. Keeps the doctor away!

Opportunity

One door closes and another one opens, ain't that how it goes?  I will let you all know which door finally opens for me.

Until then, stay-at-home-dad is my title.

Two Things

As I was heading downtown today on the BxM1 Express bus, two things happened.

First:

I walked up to the bus stop outside our building with MetroCards - times four.  Problem was, I couldn't find the fourth one.  It's a $5.50 fare for the express because it makes only a few stops before going into Manhattan.

Card #1 - $2.25
Card #2 - $0.00
Card #3 - $0.70

So $2.95 paid of a $5.50 fare - the bus driver let me on anyway.  Nice guy.

I sit in my seat and am rifling through my wallet and eventually found the real MetroCard - the one with $22.50, the one I could have used when I got on the bus.  I exited and inserted the card into the pay machine, and the bus driver gave me a smile - "Found it, huh?" to which I replied "Yeah, I knew it was in there, I wasn't trying to cheat you out of $5.50".

Good start to the day.

Second:

On the bus - which is a Coach bus, not like one of the standard city buses with the hard plastic seats - there's nice plush fabric seats.  I am lucky because I got on on like the third stop the bus makes, so there are always seats available.

As we make a few more stops, it starts to fill up, but people are so reluctant to sit next to strangers.  They'd rather stand in a 18" aisle instead of sitting down.  There isn't a need to ask if the seats taken, it clearly is empty.  SIT!

And people pull the "sit on the outside because it's a pain in the ass to move in" bullshit to a T.  There are fake sleepers, phone talkers (even though cell phone usage is frowned upon), iPod junkies - all sorts - and they all pretend not to see people walk on.  Me, I always take the window and if someone sits next to me, so be it.

I crank that air stream though because I sweat like a mo-fo on public transportation - especially buses.

So, if you're one of those assholes who thinks sitting on the outside of a two seat row is a deterrent, you may be right in Riverdale, but you're oh-so-wrong in life.

Anyway, that was my experience today that I felt compelled to share with you.  Goodnight.

Thursday in a while

I know it's been a very long while since my last post, and for good reason.  Things are a little uncertain around here for the time being.

Had an interview for the head coaching job here at Manhattan College yesterday.  I thought it went well, but it is still a very stressful time for me and my family - waiting to see if I have a job here in a few weeks isn't easy to sit back and wait on.  I'm hopeful but reserved.

Moving on, here's a little post about some of the most interesting stories I've seen today:

1. Great story for Mariners prospect Kyle Seager getting called up to play with the M's after already playing a game for AAA Tacoma earlier in the day.  (no relation for rock legend Bob Seger).

2. Former Steelers secondary coach Ray Horton gave his 1999 Mercedes SL500  to a cafeteria worker before leaving for his new role with the Arizona Cardinals as defensive coordinator.  Actually, he told the worker, Maurice Matthews, to give him the money he had in his pocket - $20.  That's all it costs this guy.  Pretty cool story.

3. Wasn't it just a few short weeks ago that everyone was talking about the dream season the Pittsburgh Pirates were having?  I thought they were tied for first in the NL Central before losing six straight recently and falling an unmanageable 6.5 GB in the standings.  It was a good run for the Bucs but once again, they disappear into obscurity.

4. Yahoo! has released a "25 Ways to Cut 500 Calories a Day" article, which always seem to be ridiculous with the content and what you could do.  Here's a few of the ways to cut calories:
     - tap your foot:  fidgeting burns 350 a day - yeah, sure!
     - use smaller plates:  unless you pack all you can on the smaller plate.
     - skip the whip:  oh yeah, because I always put whipped cream on everything I eat/drink
     - nix that smoothie a day:  again, I'm not visiting Jamba Juice every day (although I'd love to).
     - ditch the buttered movie popcorn:  at $12 a ticket, I'll just ditch the movies.

Time to get something in my stomach, getting a little hungry and I'd hate to get a migraine.  Heading up to Massachusetts Saturday to meet up with Lindsay - we have a wedding in Easton, MA.  She headed up to Martha's Vineyard this afternoon to stay with her mother for a few nights before the wedding.  She took the little guy, and I am here with Nathan.

Miss those two.

Later.

PPV

Cablevision has recently updated the logos of the channels on the television, but the PPV's are still the same, with killer titles.

Invasian #4 - I know this isn't about aliens coming down in spaceships, but is probably about Asian women doing something ...

Boobs, Butts, and Beyond - Although we do need to go to BB&B, it isn't for these two items - we need pacifiers for Nolan.

Awesome-ness

-- Buffalo Bills WR Steve Johnson - the guy who dropped the pass against the Steelers when he was wide open and said he'd never forget the drop - celebrated his birthday party with a classic cake - of his wife's ass.  Cl-ASS-y cake Steve:

-- Evan Longoria is going for the GOOOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLLLL!  Alex Morgan and he have been tweeting - and it may lead to something more than that.  Two good looking people, nationally recognized (after this WWC thing), both athletes - why not:
-- Wipeout is now on.  Oh Big Balls, have some mercy on these poor bastards:
